HOVAWART CLUB OF AMERICA
1999 ANNUAL MEETING
The 1999 Annual Hovawart Meeting took place in Elizaville, New York the weekend of September 25th. It was a beautiful, sunny weekend, with just a little chill in the evenings to remind us that it was fall in New York and help us appreciate the hot coffee after dinner. In keeping with the continuing upswing in the number of Hovawarts in the US, we had 35 humans and over a dozen Hovawarts at the show this year |
Pictured here is Ulf Westblom, President of the Hovawart Club of America, and Romy Jaworski, Treasurer of the Hovawart Club of America and our hostess for the 1999 Annual Meeting. |

Hovawarts must pass tests to assure that they conform to the breed standard (conformation testing) and tests to ensure that their temperament conforms to the ideal Hovawart temperament (temperament testing). Hovawarts are tested for both conformation and temperament when they are puppies and again when they are adults. Saturday was dedicated to judging conformation. Our club was lucky to again have Beatrix Feix, international judge from Germany (pictured in blue) to judge conformation and temperament testing. |
Our meeting this year was especially fortunate to have Trixi's father, Klaus, to perform the temperament tests on our Hovawarts. Klaus has been doing temperament testing on Hovawarts in Germany for three decades. Hovawarts are watchdogs, but they are not attack dogs and aggressive behavior is specifically discouraged. The temperament tests are conducted to ensure that a Hovawart is watchful and will guard his or her owner and property, but also to ensure that they do not do this in an aggressive way. It was fascinating to watch Klaus put all these dogs, one by one, through a series of tests designed to see what each dog would do when faced with a stranger and a strange situation. |
